At the heart of Kenya’s sustainable development movement, BuildEmission-Tracker is revolutionizing how buildings across the Lake Region Economic Bloc (LREB) are monitored and managed for climate impact. This groundbreaking, open-source platform – designed to track and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from residential, commercial, and industrial buildings – is now actively being rolled out across 14 counties in Western Kenya and the greater East African region.
Spearheaded by a team of local innovators and climate champions headed by Abwao Donatus Omondi, BuildEmission-Tracker leverages real-time IoT sensors, AI-powered analytics, and cloud-based storage to equip communities, building owners, policymakers, and businesses with actionable insights on energy usage and emissions. From Kisumu to Kakamega and down to Migori, the system is already helping identify emission hotspots, benchmark building performance, and support energy-smart retrofitting.
As part of our broader vision under IDAP Global’s digital innovation for climate resilience, this initiative forms a critical pillar in the journey to impact over 40 million East Africans living within the LREB—one of the most climate-vulnerable regions on the continent. With rising energy costs and urbanization challenges, data-driven tools like BuildEmission-Tracker are
helping catalyze sustainable urban development, green job creation, and low-carbon growth.
So far, we’ve engaged over 6,000 early adopters, trained local authorities and sustainability professionals, and launched pilot deployments in key urban centers. By 2027, the goal is to achieve a 20% reduction in emissions in monitored buildings, create thousands of green jobs, and support evidence-based policymaking through real-time environmental data.

BuildEmission Tracker is an open-source app that provides insight into the environmental impact of your building through tracking energy emissions, waste management, air quality, and resource use. Provides building owners, environmental scientists, and policymakers tools to identify inefficiencies, optimize energy and resource consumption, and utilize sustainable practices. The tool combines the features of waste monitoring, air quality monitoring, and support for environmental certifications, including LEED and ISO 14001, to offer in actionable and visualized insights to help everyone construct/restructure their projects in an eco-friendly way. BuildEmission Tracker is a platform focused on reducing emissions by improving sustainability to further global environmental objectives and promote more sustainable and healthy ecosystems and communities.
